History of Food Trucks

Food trucks actually have a rich history that dates back to over a hundred years ago. The invention of the early food truck is credited to Texas cattleman and inventor Charlie Goodnight. He invented a mobile eatery called a Chuck Wagon which served and housed food that was easy to throw together. It was a wagon covered by a waterproof cowhide and pulled by oxen and was a great way to continue westward expansion.

The version of food trucks we see today in Texas didn’t really take shape until the 1950s when mobile refrigerator vehicles were able to start selling ice cream. The idea of food trucks didn’t really take off at first. Many initial food trucks were nicknamed “roach coaches,” but people gradually warmed up to them, and they started to gain popularity (especially in recent years). Throughout the years, wagons and fellow predecessors called pushcarts have developed into what we know today. Although wagons may not be used anymore, pushcarts are still a familiar sight in city / metro areas today serving up items such as nuts, hot dogs, ice cream, and many other enjoyable street foods.
